I staggered out of the airport lugging 2 heavy pieces of baggage, a backpack strapped on both shoulders, and blood shot eyes. I had finally completed the 30 hour journey from the USA to Durban, South Africa. I squinted as I glanced up at the overbearing African sun. It’s the same one I had known on the other side of the world, but it felt much more intense. The humidity hit me almost as hard as the realization that I was in Africa for 24 months.
All that aside, I was happy. I had prepared my entire life for this. To share the book that changed my life–and to come to the realization that it’s more than just a book.
1. It will answer the questions of the soul
Questions that have puzzled us will be answered through this 531 page book. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where will I go after I die? Why does God allow suffering to happen? These and countless others will be answered when you prayerfully read and study The Book of Mormon and Bible with a humble heart.
2. The book will help you to recognize the Holy Spirit
For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do. 2 Nephi 32:5
In The Book of Mormon there are many cases where Prophets hear the whispering of the Holy Spirit and follow it. In opposition, it tells of people who failed to follow the promptings of the Spirit and the consequences. The Book of Mormon will teach you many truths and when you read them you will have a light bulb moment. An “ahhh, I didn’t know that” moment where you will feel peace and comfort. This is the Spirit speaking to you.
3. It teaches that Jesus loves everyone
The Bible is a record of God’s dealings with people in Jerusalem and surrounding areas. The Book of Mormon is a record of God’s dealings with people in the Americas. It is a further witness to strengthen the belief that Jesus loves all of us. After He rose from the grave, Jesus visits the people in America as he did in the people of Jerusalem. He not only loves the Jews in the Middle East but He loves all humanity.
4. It will solidify your belief in Jesus Christ
The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is a witness, along with The Bible, that he is our Savior, that he died on the cross and rose up so we will all live again. The Primary purpose of the book is to the convincing that Jesus is the Christ. It teaches that we “must come unto Him or [we] cannot be saved” -1 Nephi 13:40
5. The Book of Mormon will help you know what church is His
When Jesus was on the earth he established a church. (See Matthew 16:18-19) It had one set of beliefs, doctrine, and teachings. That church became corrupted and flawed through evil men who killed His apostles and changed teachings. That is why there are thousands of churches that may be good but teach differently. The Book of Mormon is a record that God prepared to be brought forth in the last days to restore all things to how they were when He was on the earth.
6. It will help you to be more confident
The Book of Mormon teaches love, prayer, humility, sacrifice, hard work, faith, and other Christ-like attributes. It will increase your knowledge of the Gospel and you will become a more confident person. You will know that the Bible is true if you know that The Book of Mormon.
By the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established -2 Corinthians 13:1
7. It will lead you to share the joy with others
The main reason The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints does missionary work is because we believe we have something unique and special. We have the restored gospel in all its simplicity. When you have an understanding of the book it will start a fire in you that you want to share with everyone who will listen. I think about all the joy I was able to bring to the people of South Africa and Swaziland. I think about them everyday.
8. It will lead you to begin a forever family
Latter-Day Saints believe that family life extends beyond the grave. We do not believe in “til death do you part.” This is because of special buildings called temples. In the temple we are “sealed” as husband and wife for this life and eternity. The Book of Mormon may seem like a simple book, but the power of the Book is profound. When you find The Book of Mormon to be true you will be guided to a life full of happiness and direction.
Do you still see it as ‘just a book?’
