8 ways to Make this General Conference the best yet

Twice a year we have the privilege of listening to messages and counsel from the Prophet, Apostles, and other leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  In the Spring and Fall we’re reminded of what we ought to be doing and we’re encouraged by what we’re doing right.

I made a list to better prepare myself for this conference.

1. Think ahead of time

What does the Lord need to speak to me at this moment in my life?

Am I having marriage struggles? Am I struggling with my testimony? Do I need help with repentance? Am I doubting Joseph Smith’s validity? Do I fear my children are straying from the gospel? Am I afraid of not finding the one? The Lord will speak to you through one of His inspired speakers, no matter what is troubling you.

2. Read past talks

My sister-in-law reminded me of the importance of reading talks from the previous general conference.  They are truly modern day revelation.  Again, if you’re struggling with something I’m confident a talk from the past will touch your heart and calm your troubled mind.

3. Take notes

Writing incorporates additional areas of the brain, rather than just listening and watching.  Don’t just write down what you hear, but what the Spirit speaks to you as you hear the talks.  Write down your feelings, write “I feel like everything will be alright” if your concern is the upcoming school year.  Write down “I need to serve my wife” if that is the thought that comes into your mind as you contemplate how to improve your marriage.

4. Remove distractions

It is a great blessing to be able to listen to the voice of the Prophet and Apostles in our home, but I’ve found personally that distractions make it difficult to enjoy.  From food, to the internet, to accidently dozing off–distractions sneak up on you.  As much as possible, make the environment conducive to the Spirit of the Lord.

5. Choose to have a good attitude

There have been times where I have looked forward to General Conference and there have been times where, for selfish reasons, I have dreaded it.   I know that if you choose to have a good attitude you will get more out of it and be truly converted to Christ. The Spirit will be more likely to teach you if you want to be taught.

6. Discuss

Discuss what you learn, enjoyed and had questions about with friends, family, and converts (if you served a mission).  It doesn’t matter if it’s through email, Facebook, Twitter, on the phone or in person. Doing so will edify and uplift everyone involved.

7. Invite friends

Invite your friends to watch general conference with you.  Pray for guidance to know who to ask.  Make the invitation genuine and natural.  It does take courage but it could lead to interest or even questions for you and the missionaries.

8. Share

Recently Elder Bednar encouraged us to share goodness on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. It truly is a blessing to have modern day revelation and the means to hear and watch it all unfold before our eyes.

Elder Bednar said it best, “I now extend to you the invitation to help transform the trickle into a flood.”

I can’t wait for this General Conference, because I’m going to make it the best yet.
